Niger Coup: ECOWAS gives One Week Ultimatum to Military Junta

In an emergency meeting organised by the ECOWAS in Abuja on 30th July, 2023, the regional body gives one week dateline to military Junta to return the country to the ousted president Muhammed Bazoum.

ECOWAS however, enforced economic sanctions on the Niger republic as a result of this military intervention.

The fifteen member states also ordered the released of the ousted president and returned to his presidential seat after overthrown by the military Junta on 26th July, 2023.

In a communiqué released after the meeting of ECOWAS in Abuja, Nigeria, the communiqué says, they took necessary actions to ensure return of constitution in Niger republic and gives one week ultimatum to return the country to democratic rule and failure to do the valued demands within one week will lead to the use of force against the military government.

Trade saction is enforced between the member states and Niger republic, even though the country is still member of the regional government.

All Niger republic funds owned by the government abroad and banks have been frozen and travel sanctions against the members of the military government.

Recently, protest broke in Niamey the capital city of Niger by the aggrieved people against the coup and attacked on the French embassy, where the French government made warning against any attacked on its property and citizens in Niger.

In a news released by the French government today, informed the Nigeriens that any attack on its citizens and property will be retaliated.

Niger republic has a long history of military intervention since independence, so there is need of  caution on taken action against any military interventions in the country.

Its advisable to the regional government ECOWAS to be caution while taking action on this measure. Instead of enforcing sanctions against the Niger government and people, its better reconsile with military government and make adequate changes on the constitution where the country seen a thread to the people that can hardly change under democratic government and move to new republic.

To me, is better if they can give them at least one year to organise new election because returning the ousted president might caused a lot of political turmoil in the country since the bodies behind the coup will be surprising.
