Extreme poverty: How beggers and Almajirai paid N20/N50 To sleep in Kano Nigeria

 Kano state government in Northern Nigeria had discovered a house that charged beggers popularly known Almajirai N20/N50 to allow small children that were malingering on the street in a day to sleep. 

Thus, reports said the beggers or Almajirai include females and underage children could take loan to pay to sleep in the house. 

According to eye witness and BBC Reporter Khalifa Shehu Dokaji said,  the nature of the house looked like TV watching center. The state government body responsible for the arresting of beggers and Almajirai closed down the house. 

However, reports have shown majority of the small children were not Almajirai but some of them ran away from their parents. 

Moreover, Almajirai were beggers associated with Islamic seeking of knowledge. There were some Muslims that believed before you seek Islamic knowledge you must be Almajiri. This saying was wrong according to the majority of Muslims and nowadays is classified as child labour that was the reason why government at all levels were fighting it and strict laws were made. 

One of these small children that ran away from their parents, begged on the street of Kano told reporters that necessity brought him out from their parents' house because of the pressure from his step mom, she used to bit him everyday and starved him, there was a day she sent him to buy something with N50 accidentally he lost the money, after biting him at that day,  she even cut part of his body with razor blade. She was giving him food when she likes or left over of her children. 

According to the child, his father divorced his mother, the mother married somewhere in Jigawa. He added that if his mother was with his father nothing will brought him there. 

He also told reporters that he was not happy with his present condition, he had no option, he was not attending school, hawked before he get money to pay to sleep in that house. 

Shehi Bakhari Mika'il is the leader responsible for the arrest of Almajirai in Kano told BBC today that 84, 68 of them were not in Kano  for Islamic knowledge. He said, some of them terrible condition of life and step moms brought them there, some were impregnated and delivered there. 

He added that, the authority had arrested their parents, will be taken to court and some with domestic violence invited Human Rights commission to take over their cases. 

Finally,  proliferation of begging among among children and adult in Northern Nigeria had been a big problem in the region for long period of time, government at all levels were saying they were trying their best to take measures to curb it.
