Psychology: Conflict As A Cause of Stress by Kurt Lewin (1953) and how it affects teaching and learning
This is a conflict between you and yourself. Lewin (1953), while explaining causes of stress, proposed the followings approaches:
1. Approach - Approach : this is a situation in which two different things that you like have same quality and you are ask to make a choice between them. Another example is, you are presented with two different girls of the same age, beauty, education and all from rich background, you are ask to make a choice between as soon as possible. Your brain will start thinking which one will you choose, this thinking of making a choice is the conflict Lewin was talking about.
2. Avoidance - Avoidance : this is a situation in which two different things that you dislike of the same dislike qualities and you are ask to make choice between them instantly. Another example is, you are presented with two different girls of same dislike qualities, you are ask to make choice between them instantly. This will make your brain thinking of what to choose.
3. Approach - Avoidance : you are presented with two things to make a choice both have positive and negative qualities, you are ask to make a choice between them instantly.
4. Double Approach - Avoidance : this is a combination of the first and second, that's Approach-Approach and Avoidance - Avoidance, in which you must make a choice between two things that each have both double positive and negative qualities.
However, if students and teachers found themselves in this situations, learning and teaching will be difficult to take place. Thinking of making a choice will divert the attention of teachers and learners from what they suppose to do in the school leading to a failure in their academic performances. For a teaching and learning to take place, teachers and students must be free from conflicts from home, environment and other places making the teaching and learning safe for both teachers and students.
